As part of the Eemshaven-Delfzijl dike reinforcement, the province of Groningen and the Noorderzijlvest water board developed a new type of dike: the Double Dike. The Double Dike consists of a higher dike on the waterfront and a lower dike inland. The two dikes together protect establishments inland from increasing sea levels and storms. The Double Dike is not only good for our safety, but also for nature, agriculture and recreation.
The goal of this project is to research and develop multiple regenerative saline farming and aquaculture practices as a model for future unused saline environments. Seaweedland acts as consultant in the building of seaweed cultivation systems for this project. Here seawater is accessible directly from the sea as tides rise and fall.
