Seaweedland Mauritius

Exploring a New Environment

Seaweedland is exploring the feasibility of land-based seaweed cultivation on Mauritius with support from a DHI grant awarded by the Dutch government and administered by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). The DHI programme supports Dutch companies in their international expansion by enabling feasibility studies and early-stage projects abroad.

The project examines whether Seaweedland’s controlled, on-land cultivation technology can be successfully applied under tropical conditions, using locally occurring seaweed species.

Mauritius is home to a wide range of native seaweeds, but current supply depends largely on wild harvesting from coastal ecosystems. This project looks at land-based cultivation as a potential alternative, offering year-round production with consistent quality and full traceability, while reducing pressure on marine environments.

The project focuses on assessing local conditions such as seawater quality, suitable locations and regulatory frameworks, as well as the performance of species like Ulva and Gracilaria in raceway systems. The outcomes will inform next steps, including a potential pilot installation and future scaling through Seaweedland’s licensing model.

By combining Seaweedland cultivation technology with local species and conditions, this project lays the groundwork for responsible international expansion and the development of a resilient, land-based seaweed value chain in Mauritius.
